Visually there is not much difference between the two products. They are both used to seal the joints between your tiles. The difference is more in the chemical make-up of the products and the benefits that come from a more waterproof and flexible product. What is the difference between flexible epoxy grout and standard grout?
At SCR Melbourne we would always recommend you re-grout using a Flexible-Epoxy Grout, rather than a Standard Grout. There are a number of reasons that we prefer our Flexible-Epoxy Grout product;
- Flexible-Epoxy grout is extremely durable and almost completely stain proof. Regular cement grout is not waterproof, so unlike epoxy grout, it can absorb water when wet and stain easily.
- Flexible-Epoxy grout is made from two different resins mixed with a filler, making it waterproof and better suited to harsher cleaning products as Flexible-Epoxy Grout offers greater bond strength and chemical resistance than cementitious grouts.
- Flexible-Epoxy Grout has been designed to absorb impact, vibration and small amount of stress and strain without cracking. Ideal of Balconies with regular foot traffic.
Having said that, if you are new to Grouting, a Standard Cementitious Grout may be an easier and more economical product for a DIYer to use.
Although it has plenty of benefits, please note that flexible-epoxy grout is more difficult to work with than regular grout and it is far more expensive to purchase. Most tilers will charge extra for using the flexible-epoxy grout as opposed to regular grout.
Flexible-epoxy grout sets quicker than regular grout so a smaller mix is advised as you will have less time to work with that mix as opposed to regular grout.
